Everybody’s values are different, and they can change over time. They reflect how we want to engage with the world, with the people around us, and with ourselves.

Why is it important to know what are your values?

Here are five benefits of values:

1. Values Help You Realise What Are Important

When you have clarified your most important values, you can better focus on what matters most to you, depict who you are, and what you want to become. As you begin to understand your values better, you may find that your time becomes more meaningful.

2. Values Keep You on Track

Defining and documenting your values solidifies your self-identity. Additionally, how you see yourself determines how you’ll act each day.

3. Values Simplify Decision-Making

Knowing your values helps you make the decisions that align most with what you care about. When you experience challenges, you can consider how you can use your values to make a choice.

4. Values Can Help Enhance Career Choice

Understanding your values can help you to choose the career and organisation you truly want, make better choices while at work, and facilitate your transition easier if you decide to accept an entirely new role. Starting your career may also help you recognise your values by allowing you to transition into a position and organisation that better reflects those values.

5. Values Help Create Meaning in Everyday Life

It’s inevitable that you have to do difficult things and face discomfort in life. But looking at these challenges through the lens of your values can shift your narrative.

When you understand and live your values, you stand for something. You gain clarity about what you want and don’t want. You lead a values-aligned life.
